Solo & Ensemble - High School

Anchor 1

Festival: January 19th, 2019

Registration Due: November 1st, 2018

Cost: Varies depending on size of ensemble; $7 - $20 per person

Scholars participating in Solo & Ensemble must register and pay their entrance fees by November 1st, 2016. Scholars should choose music from the Prescribed Music List. A copy of the music must be obtained and submitted with the audition. Many of these pieces are available through the public domain and can be found online. If the scholar chooses not to use the Prescribed Music List, they can have their piece approved ahead of time. No Broadway, Jazz, Pop, or Rock pieces will be accepted for performance.

If the solo or ensemble piece has a piano accompaniment, the scholar(s) must find an accompanist. Mrs. Denny and several scholars play piano well enough to accompany most solo and ensemble literature. Please give your accompanist enough time to rehearse and prepare.

Regional Auditions - High School

Anchor 2

Auditions: January 26th, 2019

Registration Due: November 1st, 2018

Cost: $20

Festival: February 15 - 16th, 2019

Instrumental scholars will play three etudes and scales for their audition. Some preparation time will happen in class, but most preparation will need to be done individually. Vocalists will prepare a solo from the required performance list. Mrs. Denny will provide transportation to and from the audition site.

If a scholar is accepted into Regional Band, Orchestra, or Choir, they will pay an additional $20 participation fee. The scholar will receive music to be practiced and learned on their own. The Regional Festival consists of two days of rehearsal and one performance. On the first day of rehearsal, scholars will be tested on the music that they received upon admission to the group. Chair placements will be determined based on the scholar's performance; occasionally a scholar will be dismissed from the group and an alternate will be permitted to join in their place if the music is not prepared properly.

College Guidelines

  • Attending College as a Music Major

    • Apply to the school – Fall semester of your senior year, Dec 1 deadline*

    • Apply to the College of Music (School of Music/Music Dept/etc)

      • Audition – December/January

        • More prestigious programs will have screening auditions in the fall, final auditions in the spring

      • Online application

      • Theory/Aural Perception Placement Exams – January 31

  • Attending College as a Non-Music Major, Music Minor

    • Apply to the school – December 1

    • For Performance Minors, auditions are usually required – January 31

    • Apply to the school

    • Enroll in the “Community” or “University” ensembles

  • Community Colleges

    • Later application and audition dates, up until the start of classes

*Deadlines vary, but this is a reasonably typical timeline

All colleges and universities offer merit-based scholarships for musicians who decide to major in music. Most schools will also offer partial scholarships for students who minor in music and some will even offer partial scholarships just for students who are participating in performance ensembles.

The more prestigious a school, the more competitive their application process and their scholarship awards. Top-ranked private schools like BYU, Notre Dame, Stanford, or Harvard are much more difficult schools from which to receive scholarships. Even highly-ranked state schools can be ultra-competitive when it comes to scholarship money, especially if they have large applicant pools (like ASU or UofA, who both field approximately 25-30,000 applications each year).

Smaller schools often have the same amount of scholarship money to go around, but far fewer students competing for it, and often the talent in the application pool is shallower. Students who might not get admitted to Harvard’s music program at all could receive a full ride to a smaller school. A smaller, less prestigious school can also often offer more one-on-one attention and a more welcoming, less competitive environment for incoming freshmen.
